I write because God told me to, with several purposes in mind.
The first purpose is to, through the power of the Holy Spirit, better understand how to study the Bible, which is “living” (Hebrews 4:12; 1 Peter 1:23) and “active” (Hebrews 4:12; 1 Thessalonians 2:13).
The second purpose is to communicate what I learn to believers so that, as they become more proficient in using Bible study techniques through diligent study and prayer, they develop a growing dependence on the teaching of the Holy Spirit, resulting in life change.
The third purpose of my writing is to better comprehend the saving gospel of Jesus Christ, thereby more effectively communicating its truth so that the lost would be saved and the saved would grow spiritually, resulting in life change.
In writing my series Lingering Over Romans 12:1-2, I had the opportunity, a privilege, to carefully reflect on these two theologically deep and life-transforming verses. For me, the most critical takeaway is this: You can find my series in my SUBSTACK newsletter, Study the Bible to Learn the Truth.
Biblical engagement (e.g., studying, reading, listening, meditating) in cooperation with the illumination and teaching of the Holy Spirit is the lifeblood of a genuine believer’s spiritual growth. Spiritual growth results from a renewed mind, which occurs when a believer regularly (preferably daily) and meaningfully engages Scripture in cooperation with the Holy Spirit.
For a genuine believer, this means that if you do not regularly and meaningfully engage Scripture, you must realign your priorities. You cannot assume that those who instruct you are correct. You want to hear from God firsthand, and you can do so by engaging Scripture in cooperation with the Holy Spirit. Approach Scripture with an open, humble, and surrendered mind, ask the Holy Spirit for guidance, and look forward to the treasure you will discover!
